Irish Soda bread is a quick bread, which is leavened with baking soda as opposed to the yeast that is used to leaven most breads. This tradition of baking dates back to the mid-19th Century when yeast had become scarce and baking soda and buttermilk were first introduced to Ireland as an alternative way of leavening bread.

The basic ingredients in a soda bread are flour, baking soda, buttermilk and salt.

Keltic Krust uses an authentic Irish recipe for its soda breads and bakes them in traditional "pullman" loaves and round "bannocks.” While legend says the cross was first carved on the bannocks to ward off evil, it is more likely a convention introduced to aid in the rising of the dough and in slicing the bread.

Our Wheat Soda Bread  is made with whole wheat flour. (Many of our Irish customers refer to this bread as our "brown bread.")

Our Raisin Soda Bread is made with white flour and raisins.
